As a motorist, you must know how to maintain your vehicle and identify potential faults. This is so that you can increase your chances of passing the first time when you book MOT online each year, but also so that know when the vehicle needs to be taken into the garage. There are many common faults that require immediate action, including issues with the brakes. So, what are the main signs that your brakes need checking? Keep reading to find out.

1. Vibration Via Steering Wheel

One of the clearest indicators and one that is hard to ignore is a vibration that you feel through the steering wheel. This often means that the discs have become warped, which can occur when you have overworked the brakes. You do not want to take any chances with the brakes, so you should always get them checked over if you feel a vibration through the steering wheel.

3. High Pitch Screeching

One of the most common signs that the brakes require some attention is a high pitch screeching that you will hear and this is again hard to ignore. Often, this is due to the brake pads becoming worn so they will need replacing as soon as possible.

4. Feeling Firm

Another sign that you need to get your brakes checked out is if you have a firm pedal. If you need to play pressure that is a lot stronger than normal to apply the brakes then it is likely that you have a faulty servo. This means that you will not get the vacuum assistance when using the pedal or it could be a vacuum hose component leak. A soft pedal that almost goes to the floor before engaging the brakes is another warning sign and often a result of worn brake pads.

5. Visible Wear & Tear

When giving your car an inspection and checking on the condition of your tyres, you can also check for visible wear and tear on the brakes. If you look between the wheel’s spokes, you will see the brake pads and these should be at least a quarter of an inch thick – anything less than this and they should be replaced ASAP.

6. Pulling

Another common sign that the brakes need looking at is when the car pulls to one side when braking. This could be a few problems with the brakes or tyres, so it is worth getting checked to be safe.

These are the main signs that you should get your brakes checked and it is always better to be safe than sorry. The car brakes are critical for safe driving, so you want to know what the signs are that they might need some attention so that you can react quickly and protect yourself and other road users.
