Kim Jong-hyun, also known as Jonghyun, was a South Korean artist. He sang songs, wrote music, made records, hosted radio shows, and wrote books. He was part of SM Entertainment.
For nine years, he was the lead singer of the South Korean boy band Shinee. During his time with the group, they released twelve albums in both Korean and Japanese. He also took part in SM Entertainment’s project group, SM the Ballad, and they released two EP albums together.
Jonghyun was not only part of Shinee but also made his own music. He started in January 2015 with an album called “Base,” which did really well. He followed it up with a compilation album called “Story Op.1” in September of the same year.
Then, on May 24, 2016, he released his first full album, “She Is.” After that, on April 24, 2017, he brought out another compilation album, “Story Op.2.”

How did Kim Jong-Hyun Die?
In December 2017, Jonghyun rented an apartment in Cheongdam-dong, Seoul. He checked in at 12:00 PM on December 18, 2017. Later that day, at 4:42 PM, Jonghyun’s older sister, Kim So-dam, made a call to emergency responders.
She was worried he might be planning to take his own life because he had sent her messages on KakaoTalk with phrases like “last goodbye” and “say I did well.” The last time he was seen, he was at a convenience store near the apartment.
Police and rescue workers found Jonghyun unconscious at around 6:10 PM in the apartment. He was immediately taken to Konkuk University Hospital in a state of cardiac arrest and received emergency CPR treatment.
Unfortunately, he did not regain consciousness and was declared dead at the hospital at around 6:32 PM. He was 27 years old. Investigators believe he died from inhaling toxic fumes or smoke, as they found burnt coal briquettes on a frying pan in the apartment.
At the request of Jonghyun’s family, a post-mortem examination was not carried out, and his death was considered a possible suicide by the police.
Jonghyun’s funeral took place at Asan Medical Center’s funeral hall in Seoul, starting on the afternoon of December 19. Celebrities like BTS, IU, BoA, Girls’ Generation, and Exo, along with fans, attended the three-day public funeral.
International fans from around the world also paid their respects to the singer. On December 21, after the public funeral, Jonghyun was moved to a private funeral attended only by his family and close friends. He was then laid to rest in a confidential location.
Jonghyun’s death was connected to depression by several news sources. Following his passing, a fellow singer and friend from the band Dear Cloud, Nine9, posted Jonghyun’s suicide note on Instagram.
He had sent her this note a few days before his December 9 concert. In the note, he expressed his struggles with immense depression and the difficulties that come with fame. Nine9 was very worried after reading the note, and her agency suggested she keep in contact with Jonghyun. She did her best to help him, but unfortunately, it could not stop the sad ending.
