Know Who You’re Playing To
Alright, our first entry is going to seem a little basic to some readers. But you would be floored by how often I encounter this problem. You see, entertainment is a very subjective thing. A subject that one may find completely hilarious, maybe completely taboo to another. And if you’re considering having a comedian host your event.
Then you need to be prepared for topics that can get pretty racy pretty quickly. That’s why it is so important to know who your audience is when picking your emcee. If your crowd is a little more on the conservative side, then it’s probably not the best idea to have a left-leaning comedian perform for them right? And by the same token, if you’re hosting a more adult crowd, you probably wouldn’t want to have a birthday magician hosting it.
Now, I know some of you may be thinking, well no doy! Of course, you don’t want to alienate your audience. But I said it at the beginning of this entry and I’ll say it at the end. You would be floored by how often I encounter this. It is one of the most pervasively consistent problems I experience when attending any larger function, and it’s something you want to avoid if you want a successful evening!
First Things First!
When you’re an entertainer the first impression is everything. You may think it’s a shallow perspective, but anyone in the industry knows. When you go to an audition, you need to put your best foot forward. As the interviewer never forget that the applicant’s first job is to impress you. That’s why when you first meet your applicants, it’s always a good idea to pay special attention to the way they conduct themselves.
The problem with artists is that they can be some of the most talented people on the planet, but also be some of the most unreliable. And frankly when it comes to something like a gala with so many moving parts. You’re going to want to veer towards reliability. That’s why when you first meet your prospective emcee, take a second to look them over. How are they dressed? Do they look disheveled? If that first initial glance is up to your satisfaction.
Then try to notice some of their behavior. Do they enter the room with a confident smile, or do they seem reserved? Now we can go into an almost molecular level of detail about this, but what I want you to take away from this is. If one of your applicants enters your office and lights up the room? Take notice because that is a skill transferable to any situation.
When one of your prospective emcees leaves the interview you should be 100 percent convinced that that person could entertain a crowd of hundreds. If you have any doubt, then please consider this. If the applicant’s first job is to impress you, and they don’t impress you. Then haven’t they already failed? How can you rely on them when it’s game time?
Sometimes in life, there are times to take risks and sometimes you want to pick the sure thing. Pick the sure thing. Because sometimes people just have “It”! When you’re hosting an event that has hundreds of people attending. It’s natural to be a little stressed. You’ve got a million things to worry about and a deadline stamped in big bold letters on your calendar.
Don’t worry you’ve got this. With any monumental problem, it may not seem like it at first, but the progress you’ve made is important, it’s worth it and before you know it, it’ll result in an unforgettable evening for you and all your guests! Something that’s important to remember though is not to get tripped up by a single piece of the puzzle.
If you’re having trouble finding the right emcee for your event. It’s okay, just follow this guide, give it some thought, and whatever choice you make. I’m sure it’ll be the right one!
